Abstract: Much of the training received by Speech Language Pathologists translates into a holistic understanding of a student. From skills in reading and writing development as well as an understanding of cognitive and language processes SLPs cover many domains which are considered for assistive technology. Many positions being posted for roles in assistive technology are now requesting for SLPs to step into and apply for the role. Even if you are not in an assistive technology role you may be asked to play a greater role in the consideration of assistive technology, required in every IEP.
Within this session I will begin by defining and describing legal mandates for assistive technology both from IDEA as well as embedded requirements for consideration of assistive technology within the Illinois School Code. Next, we will move on to how to perform consideration using evidence based tools which can lay a clear path for all on the team (staff, students, and families) to feel heard within the process. Finally, there will be a review of tools which can be used to support you and your team with assisting your students through assistive technology.
Assistive technology may feel like another proverbial thing on your plate. Though with the right knowledge and tools it can integrate and improve practice experiences for many students.
Summary of Presentation : With an increasing frequency SLPs are being asked to step into a new role in their school, that of "assistive technology". If this has been suggested to you, where do you start? Whether you are being assigned FTE for this position or would like to integrate more Assistive Technology knowledge and consideration into your practice this is a session to learn the steps which can lead you to success. With training in reading, writing, AAC, and cognitive skills SLPs are uniquely suited to be the advocate and point person for assistive technology.
If you are looking for more knowledge of how to find tools to accommodate your students or you are hoping to move into a role with more assistive technology responsibilities come join to learn the legal mandates behind assistive technology. We will also discuss consideration and feature matching tools. You will leave this session with tools to use when your return to your practice, all to help your students receive the accommodation they need.
